F1 spy rows set to reach climax

Renault will appear before the FIA on Thursday to answer a charge of unauthorised possession of confidential McLaren technical data.

The French team deny the information was used in their 2007 car.

McLaren, who have been found guilty on a similar charge, face further scrutiny on Friday on the Ferrari controversy.

McLaren were fined £47.5m and thrown out of the constructors' championship after being involved in an earlier spying controversy involving Ferrari data.

However, after punishing the team in September, the FIA said it would investigate further to ensure that no Ferrari data appeared in next year's car.

The FIA is expected to reach a verdict on Renault's case on Thursday but a decision on McLaren's fate is unlikely to be made until Friday or even next week.

And on the eve of the hearing, McLaren were dealt a blow in their case against Renault when they were forced by the FIA to clarify allegations made about Renault in a document prepared by their lawyers and leaked to British media, including the BBC.

McLaren submitted a dossier to the FIA which alleged that the files were discussed by up to 18 Renault F1 personnel, including a group of senior engineering chiefs and heads of department.

But they were forced to admit on Wednesday that in fact "13 Renault F1 employees had provided 18 witness statements and nine of them have so far admitted they viewed and discussed the confidential technical information belonging to McLaren".

McLaren also said it was "wrong to say that the information was loaded on to 11 Renault computers. In fact, it was copied on to 11 computer discs by former McLaren employee Phil Mackereth.

"A back-up copy of the material on Mr Mackereth's personal directory was made on to an unknown number of Renault's back-up servers/tapes".

Only two Renault employees, one of them Mackereth, admitted to viewing the McLaren information on a computer screen. The others said they saw it on print-outs or hard-copy documents.

McLaren had also claimed the information taken to Renault by now-suspended Mackereth included 780 individual drawings on computer discs.

"This was an error," the McLaren statement said. " The information [was] taken... on floppy discs, in hard-copy form and by e-mail amounts to 762 pages when printed out. The 11 computer discs included 18 individual technical drawings."

McLaren also stepped back from the earlier document's claim that the information amounted to "the entire technical blueprint of the 2006 and 2007 McLaren car".

"This requires clarification," the McLaren statement said.

"The position is that the McLaren drawings plus the information in a confidential... document taken by Mr Mackereth constitute a technical definition of the fundamental layout of the 2007 McLaren car and the technical details of its innovative and performance-enhancing systems."

Renault deny any of the data was used in their 2007 car and claim every effort was made to erase the information from their systems.

They have admitted the information was brought to the team by the now suspended Mackereth, who loaded it onto their F1 file system "without the knowledge of anyone in authority in the team".

"None of this information was used to influence design decisions," said Renault in a statement. "We have acted with complete transparency towards McLaren and the FIA, been proactive in solving this matter and we are fully confident in the judgment of the world council."

The verdict in the Renault case will be watched with interest by double world champion Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard's former team are one of his few options for a drive next season following his acrimonious split with McLaren, but a severe penalty could well put him off re-joining the outfit with which he won his titles.

Once the Renault matter is dealt with, the world council will turn its attention to McLaren's 2008 car and whether it contains any Ferrari information.

A team of independent legal and technical experts visited the McLaren headquarters in Woking last month to assess the team's design for next season's Formula One car.

The world council will view this information before deciding whether to impose any further sanctions on the team.

FIA president Max Mosley has suggested that any further sanctions could take the form of a "negative points allocation" for McLaren at the start of next season, although F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has distanced himself from such a scenario.

"What Max said after the last World Council Meeting was that if the FIA found anything on the McLaren car, they could be penalized," he said.

"But they have got to have found something in there for a start and then the World Council has got to agree it."

Race 4 da lead.............but Man-Ghuu to be blown up by Gunners at Emirates.........cmon Wenger.............kick Alex Fergussons ass

LONDON (AP) -- Arsenal is the surprise pacesetter in the Premier League title race and the Gunners' young team gets its biggest test so far on Saturday when it hosts defending champion Manchester United.

While the leading pair's first meeting this season comes too early to decide the destination of the title, it could provide a clear indication of whether the Gunners' inexperienced squad is equipped to challenge.

The signs are good after last weekend's 1-1 draw at Liverpool stretched Arsenal's unbeaten start to the league to 10 matches, but United is in imperious form having won eight straight Premier League games.

The champions have hit four goals in each of their past four matches -- the first time they have done so in 100 years -- and look set for a strong defense of their title.

"Everything is coming together, as I thought it would, and in good time to take on Arsenal in what could be a key match," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "It's still an open race but Arsenal have had a great start and they're the ones we are chasing at the moment.

"The main thing is I know we will chase them with great fervor and determination."

Arsenal has played one game fewer than United but leads because it has scored more goals. Chelsea is five points back in fourth place ahead of its match at Wigan on Saturday, while third-place Manchester City hosts Sunderland on Monday.

Arsenal was expected to struggle after the offseason sale of Thierry Henry and the gradual release of experienced players such as Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Piresand Fredrik Ljungberg.

Instead, the likes of midfielder Cesc Fabregas, Aleksandr Hleb, Emmanuel Adebayor and Theo Walcott have gone unbeaten in all competitions since April and played what some commentators believe to be the best soccer since the inception of the Premier League in 1992.

That's some statement considering how well Arsenal has played in 11 years under manager Arsene Wenger and the admiration that Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez are getting for their partnership at United.

"Challenging for a title is a new experience for a lot of their players, but some of them have been there before and the manager has, and that is a big help," Ferguson said. "People said the same about us last year, but we led the league for three-quarters of the season, so I don't think it's a handicap."

United, though, could draw upon some crucial experience for the game at Emirates Stadium, where it lost 2-1 last season. Captain Gary Neville could play his first game of the season after getting over an ankle injury and defender Patrice Evra, who has recovered from a calf problem.

United had a week off because of its early exit from the League Cup, but Wenger fielded several reserves in Arsenal's 3-0 cup win at Sheffield United, so the Gunners are likely to be equally fresh.

Fabregas has hit 10 goals this season -- six more than his tally in 54 matches last year -- and will be among the players to return to the team after sitting out the midweek win.

Also Saturday, Tottenham plays its first Premier League game under Juande Ramos when it travels to Middlesbrough.

Spurs won Ramos' debut on Wednesday, 2-0 over Blackpool in the League Cup, but the defense struggled so much against the lowly League Championship side that Ramos took off center half Younes Kaboul after less than an hour even though he did not have another defender to replace him.

"The most important thing here was the victory," Ramos said. "But against a side like Blackpool, from a lower division, we shouldn't be giving away chances like that given the difference between the two sides."

Tottenham has already beaten Middlesbrough 2-0 in the League Cup this season and is now just a place behind its opponent in the standings after Boro slipped to 17th with four straight Premier League defeats.

Also Saturday, Liverpool is at Blackburn, Portsmouth is at Newcastle, Birmingham is at Everton, Derby is at Aston Villa, and Reading is at Fulham.

West Ham hosts Bolton on Sunday.

Double world champ Fernando Alonso walks out of Vodafone Mercedes McLaren F1 team.........Ron Dennis and Hamilton are ***holes

FORMER double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso has left McLaren.

Alonso, who won the world title in 2005 and 2006, is now free to sign for another team next season after being released by the team.

“Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in life things do not work out,” said Alonso in a statement released by the team.

Team principal Ron Dennis added, “Everybody at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, especially McLaren’s Spanish partners Banco Santander and Mutua Madrilena and the team’s title partner Vodafone, want to wish Fernando all the best for the future.”

The Spaniard, who finished third in the world championship behind rookie team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s new champion Kimi Raikkonen, has had a strained relationship with the Woking-based team.

Alonso, who left Renault to join McLaren and had two years left on his deal, is reported to be ready to return to drive for the French manufacturer next season.

Alonso had been due to discuss his future with McLaren boss Dennis after a season which saw him put in the shade by Hamilton.

Since the final grand prix of the season at Interlagos in Brazil Dennis has remained tight-lipped over the future of Alonso.

In what has been a troubled season for McLaren Hamilton lost the world title at Interlagos and the team were also involved in the “spy scandal” which saw them fined £50m by the sport’s governing body.

The FIA also threw McLaren out of the manufacturers’ championship when the team was found to be in possession of technical information belonging to Ferrari.

During the FIA investigation it was alleged Alonso had threatened to go to the FIA with sensitive information. This was denied at the time by Alonso’s agent.

Alonso added yesterday, “I continue to believe that McLaren is a great team.”

But the Spaniard admitted there had been problems with the team during the season.

“Yes, we have had our ups and downs during the season, which has made it extra challenging for all of us, and it is not a secret that I never really felt at home,” he said.

“I know there have been suggestions of favouritism within the team and people say a lot of things in the heat of battle, but in the end I was always provided with an equal opportunity to win.

“Today’s decision allows all of us to focus on 2008, and I wish the team, Vodafone, Banco Santander, Mutua Madrilena and all the other team partners who I have worked closely with during the year, the best for the future.”

Dennis also admitted the team and Alonso had not been able to resolve their differences.

“He is a great driver, but the combination of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and Fernando has not worked out, and in the end we reached a stage where none of us could find a way to move forward,” said Dennis. “We all believe that our joint decision to part company is for the best.”

Arsenal regains TOP SLOT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Man-Ghuu's hope shattered...........Fabregas scores................to even Gerrard's goal..1-1 draw

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League on Sunday when they rallied for a 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard put the home side ahead in the seventh minute with a fierce shot. But Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas hit his 10th goal of the season with 10 minutes left to ensure both sides continued their unbeaten starts to the Premier League season.

Arsenal joined defending champions Manchester United, who beat Middlesbrough 4-1 on Saturday, on 26 points and with the same goal difference, but leads the standings having scored more goals.

Liverpool dropped to sixth place on 20 points, while Blackburn moved up to fifth with a 2-1 win over Tottenham, which remained in the relegation zone after conceding an injury-time goal for the fifth time this season.

Bolton moved up a place with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, while Derby replaced Bolton in last place after a 0-2 home loss to Everton.

While Arsenal went into Sunday’s match at Anfield unbeaten in any competition since April, Liverpool were seeking a return to form after a 1-2 Champions League loss to Benfica in midweek.

The Gunners, who routed Sparta Prague 7-0 on Tuesday, pressured Liverpool with their fast, accurate passing, but Gerrard drew a save from goalkeeper Manuel Almunia with a low shot before Liverpool took the lead from a free-kick move just outside the area. The kick was touched sideways to Gerrard, who smashed a shot through the defensive wall and into the net.

Tottenham fired coach Martin Jol in midweek after the club’s poor start, but his replacement Juande Ramos watched from the stands and saw a performance typical of those that have blighted the club’s season.

Tottenham led Blackburn at White Hart Lane through Robbie Keane’s 49th-minute penalty kick, awarded for a foul on Aaron Lennon by Stephen Warnock.

Tottenham peppered Blackburn’s goal with shots that either missed or were saved by goalkeeper Brad Friedel, but were unable to hold onto the lead. Benni McCarthy hit a 60th-minute equaliser that deflected off defender Michael Dawson and, in added time, Christopher Samba took advantage of another defensive lapse.

Arsenal 7-0 Slavia Prague

Arsenal put on a magical display at the Emirates Stadium as they closed in on the Champions League knockout stages.

Cesc Fabregas' stunning strike put the Gunners ahead after five minutes and David Hubacek's own goal made it 2-0.

Theo Walcott got his first Champions League goal after a goalkeeping error before Alexander Hleb scored one and set up Walcott for his second.

Fabregas finished a fabulous move and substitute Nicklas Bendtner wrapped up Arsenal's best ever home win in Europe.

Bounce back Alonso and kick Ferrari's ass

Not a thing to worry abt Fernando Alonso...........the next year is ours........Renault suits u best..........be back in F1 nxt year and kick Ferrari's ass like u did vid deie seven times world champion Michael Schumacher
McLaren set to launch fuel appeal
BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld leads Lewis Hamilton during the Brazilian Grand Prix
BMW's cars held up Hamilton during the race but were not excluded
Lewis Hamilton still has a slim chance of taking the F1 title after McLaren said they would contest a decision not to punish two other teams in Brazil.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen won the race to edge out Hamilton, who finished seventh, for the drivers' championship.

Race stewards then investigated alleged fuel irregularities by Williams and BMW Sauber, but decided not to punish them.

Had they been disqualified, Hamilton would have finished fourth, earning him enough points to become world champion.

McLaren notified motorsport's world governing body, the FIA, late on Sunday of their intention to appeal against the stewards' verdict.

The problems with the BMW Sauber and Williams cars centred on a technical infringement - a fuel-temperature irregularity - which could have given them an advantage.

Nico Rosberg finished fourth in his Williams while the BMW duo of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld were fifth and sixth.

But after a three-hour hearing, the race stewards chose to impose no penalty on either team, ensuring Raikkonen could celebrate the first F1 title of his career by finishing one point ahead of Hamilton and McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso.

It's very unsettling to have this appeal, but there is so much at stake and the FIA have to find somehow a way of being consistent

Damon Hill

The outcome has upset former world champion Damon Hill, who has accused F1's race stewards of exercising double standards.

He feels McLaren have been on the wrong side of FIA decisions on more than one occasion this season while other teams have escaped censure.

"It does get quite difficult to see where the consistency lies," Hill told Radio 5live.

"If you go back to the beginning of the season, McLaren's argument is that Ferrari won the very first race using a device which was later found to be illegal by the FIA.

"They removed it but the result stood.

"It's very unsettling to have this appeal, but there is so much at stake and the FIA have to find somehow a way of being consistent.

"I can see how a couple of degrees fuel temperature can be regarded as being so negligible that it wouldn't make any difference.

"But we're talking about such tiny differences all the time in Formula One, there has to be a line where you're one side or the other."

Under FIA regulations, no fuel on board a car may be more than 10 degrees centigrade below ambient temperature - the prevailing temperature on the track.

If you put chilled or cool fuel into a car you get between 5 and 10 horsepower increase

Eddie Jordan

But in initial findings there was a clear discrepancy.

Heidfeld's fuel was 13C lower than ambient at his first stop and 12C lower at his second.

Kubica's varied by 14C, 13C and 13C at his three stops, while Rosberg's was 13C and 12C out at his two stops.

Cooler fuel can give a car a performance advantage.

It is denser, so it can take slightly less time to refuel a car or marginally more fuel can be added in the same time.

Cooler fuel would also give a slight power advantage for about three laps before returning to the temperature out on the track.

However, the total advantage for each car over the race distance was almost certainly no more than a second.

Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan agrees that cars do gain an unfair advantrage if they use cooler fuel but thinks McLaren will find it hard to launch a successful appeal.

He says it will be difficult to prove that the fuel temperatures at the time the fuel entered the cars broke the rules.

"If you put chilled or cool fuel into a car you get between 5 and 10 horsepower increase," he told 5live.

606: DEBATE
They shouldn't bother appealing, whilst Hamilton has doen superbly this season he choked when the pressure was on at the start.

We all follow United

"Now that is a significant amount and would be enough to exclude a car if it was found to have done so, but I am not sure at this late stage how you can actually get that proof."

Hamilton could only finish seventh in the final race of the season at Interlagos after a poor start, hampered by an apparent mechanical problem on lap eight when he dramatically slowed at one point, almost to a stop.

He could be seen rocking in his McLaren, virtually willing it to get going, while all the time the field streamed by.

Whatever the problem, his car finally regained power, but he was left with too much to do.

Finn Raikkonen, 28, led home team-mate Felipe Massa in a Ferrari one-two at Interlagos.

Alonso finished on the same points as Hamilton, but the double world champion from Spain was third on countback.

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Lewis Hamilton, who might be punished for having used two sets of wet tyres in the morning session, finished first in second session.

This is a good result for the British pilot despite he has never been to Interlagos before; in addition, he left Spaniard Fernando Alonso and Finn Kimi Räikkönen behind, who finished second and third respectively.

Hamilton was 122 thousandths-of-a-second faster than defending champion Alonso, 345 thousandths-of-a-second faster than Räikkönen; Ferrari's second pilot Felipe Massa finished between them.
